CAPITAL IDEAS

We recently hosted a ‘Familiarization Trip’ (FAM) for a small group of journalists and travel industry experts who were considering Newfoundland as a weekend retreat for their clients / readers / followers. The latest trend in the industry focus’ on ‘Short Haul’ destinations, and with non stop direct flights to London, UK, Montreal, PQ and Toronto, ON – the capital city of St. John’s fits well within their new set of parameters and standards.

While flight times and distances are certainly paramount in any consideration for short haul weekend escapes, the attractiveness of the destination is of even greater importance, so their visit was especially critical, and equally rewarding when one lady described our capital city of St. John’s as “exquisite” and “truly exotic”.

“… short haul shopping boutiques …”

In response to these developments, we’ve designed a five-day weekend escape that allows guests to maximize every moment of their time, alleviates transportation challenges, and heightens the authenticity of every experience. We’ve incorporated the very best of activities, attractions, coastal vistas, archaeological and geological wonders, song, language,,, you name it. Everything you could imagine and hope for – during daylight hours anyway.

Thanks to the ‘George Street’ entertainment district (New Orleans of the North), we figure that nights in our capital city take care of themselves. No doubt our guides and your new friends will direct you to a host of titillating evening options – especially “Pop Up” events, festivals, special performances, visiting displays, freakish natural occurrences like caplin rolls, and of course, the many wonderful restaurants, pubs, and galleys. But we’d like to help you start planning the perfect “Get Away” by getting into the goodies early.

A “Capital” idea, eh boy!

1. Signal Hill Sunrise / Sunset – The days are full but if its in you, make the effort to gain the top of Signal Hill and gaze upon the amazing evening and morning skies we experience in our capital city of St. John’s. The best vantage is found at the summit which stands at only 167 m, but since the climb starts at sea level you’ll benefit from every step. Thankfully it’s a gradual climb, though guests using the North Head Trail should be advised of a rather steep and long stair case located on the back side of this National Historic Site.

“… sunrise and sunsets …”

2. Quidi Vidi Kitchen Party – Join the brewery crowd for a night filled with good people, fun music and great beer. This is the largest and most seasoned craft brewery in the capital, and a healthy mix of local St. John’s residents ensures a good time will be shared by all. This is a wildly popular event so arrive early to avoid the line up.

3. Textile and Visual Arts – There are so many wonderful exhibits by local painters, sculptors, and craft artisans that you will want to establish a plan to maximize your time in each location. Our favorites include Christina Parker, Emma Butler, NONIA, NL Crafts Council. Most remain open until 9pm

4. The Rooms – Newfoundland’s public art gallery, museum, and archives are all available for viewing in this magnificent architectural monument that has become synonymous with the skyline of our capital here in St. John’s, Newfoundland

5. Geocenter – Newfoundland comes by its nick name ‘The Rock’ quite honestly. You’ll marvel over its sheer dominance but will wonder no more regarding its importance. The Geo Center provides an underground view of the glacially carved city valley and the wild insights it provides on the geological world and its significant influences on our daily lives. Including the glacial and climate changes that left Newfoundland’s rock exposed for study and science.

“… geological center of the planet…”

6. Commons Stroll – St. John’s boasts many green spaces, including some that are difficult to recognize (believe) as accessible to the public. Though small, these parklands and public properties  are densely concentrated in the downtown core and make for lovely walks during the morning and evening time. The parks are well maintained and ordained with beautiful art sculptures and many ornate flowers and shrubbery. Link the Harbourside Park / Terry Fox Monument / Government House / Bannerman Park / Constabulary Square / Mile 1 / Chinese Memorial / Waterfront

7. Restaurants – Newfoundland has become the darling of the culinary world and you will want to take full advantage. Pub lunches are delightful at any George Street location and many guests engage in a personal “Fish and Chips” contest, choosing the same plate from several different establishments over the course of their stay. Finer dining options are also available and reservations are recommended for many. Including Raymond’s, Mallard Cottage, Fish Exchange, Salt House

8. Screech In – Steer clear of the beer and enjoy this fun induction ceremony for honourary Newfoundlanders. We figure only the smartest people can find their way to Newfoundland, and thus feel a kindred acceptance that’s deserving of a special welcome. Remember to respect the rum. ‘Screech has come along way since its use as a trading commodity and today it’;s recognized as a beautiful, award winning rum. Remember that even the finest malt scotch tastes nasty when you shoot it.

9. George Street Bakery – St. John’s boasts some hidden gems and these pastries are among the finest. Baked fresh each morning, you will want to arrive early to secure your favorites. Ask for master baker and owner Steve Lewis for bonus laughs and cheer.

10. Moo Moo’s Ice Cream – Tucked on the low side of ‘Rawlins Cross’ is a brightly painted ice cream factory that churns out the most delectable flavours of home made, real ice cream. Great on any day, no matter the time or weather.

11. Mass / Church – As the provincial capital, St. John’s amassed tremendous amounts of wealth through the trade of salt fish and seal products; feeding the world since the early 1500’s and rendering the oils used to lubricate the Industrial Revolution from the 1700’s, No where is this wealth better displayed than in the many towering cathedrals in the down town core. Stop to admire the architectural beauty or come for service to experience the perfectly pitched pipe organs

“… display of wealth…”

12. Crow’s Nest – This is a well-kept secret that has only recently been made available to the general public. The Crow’s Nest is aptly decorated with military swag offered by the officer’s who would have exclusive access to this hidden reprieve form the enlisted men. Bonus feature is a periscope lifted from a captured WW2 U-boat and installed in the club many eons ago.

13. Train Station Museum – There are no more trains in Newfoundland, but the remains of this ridiculous project (A true ‘Railroad Job’) can be viewed at the old Train Station on Water Street. Newfoundland’s train system may be one of the cruelest jokes of all time, but for those who enjoy transportation history and a good chuckle, this is a worthwhile stop.
