CRAB CROWD

This is a fun and informative video I took last week when the boys were preparing for the crab fishery which opens in Newfoundland on April 6, 2015.  Quite the investment of time, energy and patience. Thankfully these guys approach every job like true Newfoundlanders – with a smile on their face, a light heart and a strong back.

“I’se da Bye” takes on a whole new meaning.

Here are some interesting stats on this quota from Newfoundland ‘Snow Crab’;

90,000 ton quota

300 pots in total

75 pots in a string

4 strings of pots

Pots are set in about 100 fathoms of water – Yes that’s 600 feet deep

There’s 10,0000 fathoms of rope on board 60,000 ft of rope

Oh yes – and 4 ‘Skanes’ of bio degradable twine

Thanks to all of my crew from the ‘South Side’ of the harbour.
